Parliament is Supreme??????

Last six months the phrase has made rounds on the media more than any other. every political person went incessantly about beseeching supremacy of parliament and proving it otherwise in their actions. The most, the government. Anyone even remotely connected by the government, at the drop of his hat went into rhetoric of using the phrase.

I may not know mush about political science but one thing I am sure of is that in democracy parliament is just an instrument to ensure that the law of the land is upheld for the component of the country which is supreme - the people of the country.

When Anna Hazare started his revolution against corruption, almost whole of the nation got up to experience the new found frenzy and vigor to fight for themselves. The revolution may not be comparable to what JPN did in 70s but it was an awakening the country needed. The youth, and the old, the urban and the rural mass woke up equally at the call from Jantar Mantar followed by from Rajghat followed by from Tihar Jail and then from Ramlila Maidan.

All the while when the citizens of the country were getting up, the political ruling class took an ostrich-like approach and got itself into denial mode, only to be shaken up to wake up to new reality. The inertia of denial was so huge that it kept on repeating itself and repeated shaking up seemed to have been wasted as water being poured on a pot kept upside down.

Well, this time around, when it appeared that perhaps movement has experienced a set back as the number of people, the core strength of this movement, dwindled down, political class had an excellent opportunity to prove to the country that they stand with the mass and not staying in an ivory tower. The ostrich stroked again. The government could not see what was visible to anyone in the country. agreed, parliament has the right to make laws for the country but the need of a common man is the one which has to be addressed by the parliament - that the purpose of the parliament. But the egoistic government did not heed to the cry of the nation and brought forward a bill which was ill-thought, atrociously useless and ill-conceived. It was apparent that the government wa sin no mood to pass an effective anti-corruption law. What would you expect form a government, where the home minister has been involved in a scam and whole government machinery is being used to protect the wrong-doer?

The bill was to fail in Rajya Sabha (upper House) and the ruling party knew it quite well. So they enacted a drama and ensured that the votes are not to be in the 'Supreme place' - what a way to prove that the parliament is Supreme!!!!
